just here celebrating mardi gras. now we're seeing more of a focus on football and seeing a lot of 49ers fans. >> it's expensive to stay the whole week. i think the 9er fans are probably going to start sneaking in thursday, friday and saturday. i guess the big hit so far down there you have the harbaughs one coach on one team one on the other but the parents held their own press conference and they were hilarious yesterday, weren't they? >> they really did. they held their press conference. i enjoyed their press conference more than the brothers press conference but they are very proud of their two sons. and they really got a kick out of each other. in fact, the dad gave his wife a little kiss for good luck. take a luck. >> and one other thing we like to say. you're going to ask us how we feel on this historic event. jackie, who has it better than us? >> nobody!

>> they are not saying where they will sit during the game but they expect to spend more time with the son who loses rather than the son who wins. but they're proud of both. one 49ers team member is apologizing for some comments he made earlier this week in new orleans. the team is also apologizing and with more on that is cbs 5's cate caugiran. reporter: the question this morning though is, will fans be forgiving? this aof controversial comments cornerback chris culliver made earlier this week. take a listen. >> i don't do the gay guys, man. i don't do that. >> are there any on the 49ers? >> nah, we don't got no gay people on the team. they gotta get up out of here if they do,. can't be with that sweet stuff. >> is that true? >> yes. >> reporter: yesterday the football player issued an

apology saying, quote, it has taken me seeing them in print to realize that they are hurtful and ugly. those discriminating feelings are truly not in my heart." but the backlash is continuing this morning. a radio host said in an op evidence piece: >> reporter: the team hasn't said what type of discipline or fines chris culliver will face if any. but they said they do not endorse or support what he said. reporting live in the castro, cate caugiran, cbs 5. and new orleans and san francisco i think you've noticed a lot of similarities. there's a lot of differences there, too. but i guess the new orleanians owe a big thank you to the folks in san francisco.

>> reporter: this is a really interesting story. i learned a lot about the history of san francisco doing this story. they are still thanking them decades later because some san franciscans came here to new orleans many years ago and helped them save the view. >> reporter: when people around the world think of the vieux carre they think of scenes like this but it almost looks like this. >> we're not talking about a highway. we're talking about an act of barbarism. >> reporter: it would stand 40 feet tall and six lanes wide 3.5 miles of it running between the mississippi river and the city's iconic st. louis cathedral. [ church bells ] >> jackson square, the highway. gone. no access to the river. it's over. >> reporter: and the damage wouldn't end there. >> all you see in front of us, all these trees, all the grassy grounds are gone. this is an up ramp to an elevated highway.

>> both the mayor, the governor, the city council, all wanted that elevated highway in the worst way. >> reporter: so a small group of new orleanians went to war. >> we were the underdogs. >> reporter: until reinforcements arrived from san francisco. >> they wouldn't accept a nickel. they came on their own to save the city of new orleans from an elevated highway based on their experience in san francisco with the embarcadero. never seen anything like it. >> reporter: the san francisco brigade's best weapon, one single image. >> we had a photograph of the embarcadero as it passed in front of the ferry building in san francisco. and we juxtaposed a drawing that we did of the vieux carre riverfront expressway elevated in front of jackson square and we sent this out as a christmas card all over america. >> reporter: with that shot, the project was defeated. the tide of urban freeways was turned. and new orleans was saved. >> we owe san francisco big time.

>> reporter: as for the embarcadero freeway -- >> san francisco doesn't want to be walled in or walled up from our waterfront. >> reporter: a demolition project new orleans never had to bother with. >> for me to be able to sit on this balcony with cocktails in the afternoon and look out and know that that concrete up ramp is not here and that the trees are here, the grounds are here, it makes the old-fashioned taste better than it would ordinarily. >> reporter: boy, we really cannot take for granted the beauty of the bay area. and, of course, the people here in new orleans do not take their view for granted, as well. all right. well, coming up, baltimore anchors at our cbs sister station made a little bit with us about who is going to win the super bowl and what they need to do when the 49ers win. we'll have that coming up. >> i like your style, michelle. and the 9ers better win because what they want us to do is

pretty scary. everything 9ers is going like hotcakes including pricy club seats at the brand-new stadium in santa clara. good timing with the super bowl of course. and $80,000 apiece club seats at the 50-yard line are nearly all gone. 9ers have sold out 95% of the 900 prime seats. the team says this season's super bowl run probably helped to increase sales. you think? the season tickets come with free food, drinks, parking act. works. passes to roam the sidelines, behind the players, during the games. good deal. all right. well, we are live here in new orleans. the sun is coming up. so it's bringing a little warmth. lawrence, i told you that it was chilly a little bit ago. my hands are freezing but it's getting a little warm so that makes me happy. >> you know, almost going to feel like the bay area today. you're going to have a high of about 57 degrees so that's typical for san francisco about this time of year. still in the bay area, though, it is not going to be typical

at all. in fact, we're going to see temperatures running well above the average. out over the bay bridge right now they have been testing the lights out there. i don't think they're blinking right now but it's been fun to washington throughout the day today, we are going to see a whole lot of sunshine and the temperatures going to be warming up nicely. right now, still some 30s and 40s. patchy fog in the valleys. high pressure still over head and it's going to sit around here for the next couple of days and probably into the weekend. no threat of rain, just a departure of how warm it's going to get outside as we see the temperatures on average in the 50s and 60s, by this afternoon as much as 9 degrees above average in santa rosa at 67. about 66 degrees in san jose and 63 degrees in san francisco. more on your weather coming up in a moment. right now let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> slightly better news out of sunnyvale now. they have been able to reopen a second lane so now two left lanes are getting by after this big rig accident northbound 101 approaching fair oaks avenue. this was the scene just a little while ago. caltrans crews are still working hard to clean up. out towards the bay bridge, we understand they have just finished that testing of the lights on the upper deck on the

western span as lawrence just mentioned. so now no delay getting into san francisco by the way at the bay bridge toll plaza. let's go back to our maps. this is the latest on that big rig accident once again northbound 101 at fair oaks. you can see it is still slow in the area, 34 miles per hour. drive time is 13 minutes on northbound 101 between 280 and highway 237. and a quick update now on this is in the east bay. all lanes clear as of about 10 machines ago southbound 880 approaching embarcadero. that's a check of traffic. back to you. an emotional plea from former congresswoman gabrielle giffords yesterday for action on gun violence. >> violence is a big problem. too many children are dying, too many children. >> giffords appeared before the senate judiciary committee

which is holing the first hearings on gun control since newtown, connecticut's shooting. the "washington post" says giffords' speech therapy wrote the statement and it took a tremendous amount of practice for her to read it yesterday. some dangerous winds and tornadoes ripped through four southeastern states. the tornadoes causing major damage in adairsville, georgia. you can see the funnel cloud barreling through the downtown area. mighty scary. it flipped cars, demolishing homes. at least one person is dead in that town. same storm system is blamed for another death in tennessee. storm has passed but temperatures are expected to drop in the southeast today. here's what happens when somebody bets against the ravens. our game day wager with the cbs station in baltimore coming up next. ♪ we will be champions, my friends ♪ >> and the musical tribute to the 49ers by one of the longest running stage productions right here in san francisco.

lis. it's the symbol of new orleans. so we had to ask, what does it all mean? [ pause ] >> okay. well, we were going to show our story about the fleur de lis. i guess we are going to have to wait for that a little bit later. we see it everywhere. we have seen people tatooed with it on their wrist. and we saw a woman with a tattoo on her face. >> it is a big deal there. its on the new orleans saints helmets, as well. quick question. you know the mayor of denver. that didn't look like it was out of his comfort zone. if mayor ed lee had to do that, i think it might be out of his. >> you think so? i don't know. i don't know if mayor lee is a dancer or not. i know that michael hancock is certainly a dancer. so -- but i don't think mayor lee like i said, i don't think he has to worry about it. 9ers are winning. >> if you saw the jacket he was wearing yesterday, maybe it's not. thank you, michelle.

in traffic, liz is back after a couple of days off and joins us with what is i guess a busy day already. >> i know. yeah. there is no rest for the weary. it is a busy morning already in traffic. we have been following this traffic alert since we got if the door. around 2:30 this morning, there was an accident involving a big rig so it's been out there in lanes for quite a while. our photographer took this video earlier this morning. northbound 101 in sunnyvale approaching the fair oaks avenue exit, multiple lanes blocked. they have been able to open now two of the left lanes but traffic is still squeezing by. there's a lot of debris in lanes. there was some damage to the guardrail fuel special in the area, 30 gallons of fuel spilled at one point. so this is what it looks like now. this is the bottleneck northbound 101 that traffic alert in effect. the drive time up to 14 minutes now on northbound 101 between 280 and highway 37. 280 highway 85 are going to be great alternates. golden gate bridge traffic moving fine this morning. we saw them doing lane changes a while ago and a quick note. this is a new accident just

reported westbound 580 approaching grant line. drive time though still okay but it may be busy behind that accident where one lane is block. that's a check of your tim time. for the latest on your forecast, it was gorgeous coming in from the east coast. >> loving it. >> it's going to be better today, elizabeth. a lot of sunshine coming our way as high pressure sits overhead. er who we go again, almost spring-like temperatures. outside we have some 30s and 40s, some patchy fog in the north bay valleys although not as thick now and then toward the afternoons the fog long gone and temperatures soaring near 70 in some of the warmer inland spots, 60s inside the bay and out at the coastline. all courtesy of high pressure that continues to build in across our skies. it will sit here over the next few days sending any threat of rain well to the north. so we're going to keep these temperatures running above the average outside. in fact, looking pretty good not evenly here but around much of the state. 60s into the central valley, 40s and 50s in the high country, about 66 in the monterey bay am around our bay we'll keep those temperatures in the 60s and well, boy, 7 degrees in mountain view,

that's a nice day there. 68 in oakland and 67 in santa rosa. next couple of days, we will continue the trend and a few more clouds over the weekend. cooler weather, maybe starting to get a little unsettled toward the mill of next week. >> i was talking to some friends in new orleans last night. it was like 38 degrees. >> yeah. it's amazing when that cold front swings through what happens, the weather really attention a turn. >> so much for that golf weather. when we come back,, the fleur de lis is a simple bottom of the city of new orleans. michelle find out what it means. that and much more. we'll see you in a few.

become synonymous with the big easy.. right? it is 5:23. you can't think of new orleans without picturing the fleur de lis and it's on the saints helmets and all overtown. what can you tell us about it? >> reporter: frank, the fleur de lis is everywhere even or light posts. we took a carriage ride through the french quarter. i couldn't how many i saw. so we had to ask, what does it mean? reporter: fleur de lis is a symbol of the city. >> it's a symbol of france and royalty the royal family of france when the city was founded. flower of the lily was a symbol that was on the flag of the

house of bourbon. it's become the symbol of the french and the city, fleur de lis, flower of the lily. >> reporter: and there you go. people here in new orleans are very proud of their culture and their history. all right, coming up, we have heard from the harbaugh brothers already. but i don't know, their parents talk and it's pretty funny, frank. >> okay. we have to ask you again, are you seeing niner fans? are they starting to mingle, ravens fans? is the city getting ready for the big game? >> yes. we're seeing it more focused toward football now, a lot of the banners have gone up and, of course, a lot of 49ers banners. and yesterday, we're backing along jackson square and the french quarter and we saw a lot of red and gold. so fans are making their way into towns. >> thank you, michelle. it is 5:25 now. a very special performance sunday in new orleans at the

a big difference from yesterday. take a look at this. this is what it look like on bourbon street early yesterday morning. that rain just came in so quickly. it brought those dark clouds, some then, and even some lightning. and it caused a little damage though. it made it a little difficult for some of the super bowl happenings a bit of a challenge for us and other media outlets in new orleans of course. that heavy rain though brief caused water ponding at broadcasting locations, water made its way into one of the studios at the end of the convention center boulevard. crews had to wrap plastic around very expensive equipment including lights and including those cameras to keep it from getting wet. and here where we are right now, they had to tie everything down because of that rain and the strong winds that were blowing yesterday. >> well, you had the rain yesterday. and you're always looking for a good story and you would think it would be about the players.

maybe the coaches. you know? they are brothers. but it was actually about their parents. they were unbelievable yesterday, weren't they? >> yes, they were. we have already heard from the harbaugh brothers. we have heard a lot from the team players. now it's the brothers' parents' turn to talk to us a little bit about their sons. this is what they said. >> loose lips sink ships. and they both have subscribed to that philosophy. so no one talks to anyone. jim is very quiet and guarded and john is very quiet and guarded and that's exactly the way we wante them. >> and so are we. >> all right. they are not saying who they're going to be sitting with and who they're rooting for but i'm sure they are going to root for both of their sons. one of the 49ers players is apologizing for some comments he made earlier this week. the team is also apologizing. cbs 5's cate caugiran has a

cbssf.com. you had some powerful statements. talk to us on what he said. >> i really think the impact i said is the people who haven't come out yet who want to come out of the closet and live a happy life, he just shut the door on them with those comments. he said you're not welcome especially in my profession. and i think that does real damage especially to youth in america because that's who really is, you know, they are trying to answer the questions themselves about their own sexuality. >> and i know the 49ers have not come out yet with what other type of discipline or fine that chris culliver could be facing. in your opinion, what do you think should happen? >> it doesn't need to be punishment. it needs to be outreach to the community. he should go in and talk to lgbt groups or he should actually go into high schools and middle schools where they have strong gay-straight alliances. these kids have figured it out. they figured out how to get along. so why can't adults figure out how to get along? chris should learn from those kids. they are 14, 16, 18, they figured it out. they will help him figure it out. >> thank you so much, greg, for

joining us early this morning. if you want to read his piece it will be featured on our website, website, cbssf.com. reporting live in the castro, cate caugiran, cbs 5. back live out here in new orleans, the sun is shining so lawrence that's good news for us because it is getting a little warmer. >> it's been cold there this morning, temperature of 49 degrees. the humidity is lower, too, good news for your hair, michelle. patchy fog in the north bay valleys cold in spots 33 and fog in the napa valley. 34 santa rosa. 38 livermore. 41 degrees in san jose. high pressure dominating now and, boy, we are in for a spectacular day. in fact, lots of sunshine and some of these temperatures near 70 by the afternoon. 66 san jose, 67 cupertino, 66 santa clara. east bay temperatures well in the 60s this afternoon. mostly sunny skies also inside

the bay one of the warm spots, oakland checking in about 68 degrees. how long can this nice weather last? we'll talk about that coming up. first let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> we have a major backup on northbound 101 heading towards sunnyvale because of this big rig accident reported nearly three hours ago am so two lanes are blocked. two of the left lanes are blocked northbound 101 approaching fair oaks avenue. the big rig wasn't severely damaged but there was a lot of damage to the guardrail, fuel spilled and there's a lot of wood debris to clone up so that's why caltrans crews are still hard at work. again we're seeing backups for at least a mile looks like on the northbound lanes of 101. new accident westbound 580 approaching grant line road. we are seeing slowing there now. that one lane is still blocked. now, all the way through livermore, the roads still look clear. towards tassajara close to the dublin interchange, everything is moving so far at top speeds. so just before that grant line road exit where we are seeing

some traffic jams. elsewhere, westbound 80 approaching tennessee street out in vallejo, accident there just cleared from lanes but look at that, a member of the kcbs phone force just alerted us that traffic is stacked up from at least redwood road. that's a tongue twister. frank, back to you. >> especially at this hour. thank you. 5:35 now. everything 9ers as you might imagine is going like hotcakes including some pricy club seats at the brand-new stadium in santa clara. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is in the south bay this morning. we're talking tens of thousands of dollars to get your hands on one of these seats, right? >> reporter: yeah. you know, a lot of people scoffed when santa clara decided to build this stadium here behind me saying they weren't going to be able to fill it and it turns out, they are doing a pretty good job of that. these club seats which are very expensive are almost sold out. they cost about $80,000. they have 900 of these seats at the 50-yard line. 95% sold. this is the second most

expensive sports seats in the u.s. right now. the dallas cowboys trumps it with $150,000 seats. the 49ers have sold $68 million worth of seat licenses so far for those primo seats an if you buy one, you still have to buy tickets to the game which can run thousand dollars for the season tickets. it gives you free food, drinks, park, club areas roaming the sidelines, and you have the right to super bowl tickets at face value. if you are a big spender, you can buy a suite that costs even more, up to a half million dollars. so get out your wallet if you are a big 9ers fan. certainly what they have been doing here making it to the super bowl has been a huge help to the team in selling out these seats. live in santa clara, anne makovec, cbs 5. >> that is a lot of do re mi. thank you, anne.

you know, michelle, i know security is probably tight there. you've seeing more every day. >> yes. there is a big police presence here every we're we go. president obama's homeland security chief janet napolitano is in new orleans to review the super bowl security plans. you can't help but not miss these stepped up security measures around downtown new orleans. it's hard to miss. uniformed officers are everywhere along with a small army of federal and state agents. >> we have been working very closely with new orleans with the state of louisiana and with many other state and local partners to make sure that the runup to the game is safe and secure and that the game itself is safe and secure. >> reporter: this is interesting. one coordinator for homeland security declared new orleans the safest city on the planet

this week. the nfl is also doing its part. it's hired 4,000 private security guards and crowd management personnel to work the super bowl. and police are also cracking down on gun owners. so far this year, new orleans police have arrested 17 people for carrying a gun within 1,000 feet of a carnaval parade one of them just this past weekend and police are quadrupling the number of officers patrolling the french quarter this week. they say the murder rate is 10 times the national average during super bowl week. and the police chief said 1200 of the new orleans police department officers are out and about patrolling not only the center of the new orleans and the outlying areas and they 300 other officers coming in to help with all of these people expected here for the super bowl. >> it's a big day international media from all over the world so many eyes, billions will be watching this game so that is

no surprise. and we are starting to hear a little bit more about the pre- game festivities for the super bowl. i guess the kids from sandy hook are going to be there taking part. what will they be doing? >> well, frank, you said it right. it is a really nice touch. we just learned that the chorus from sandy hook elementary is comprised of 26 children. they will sing "america the beautiful" if the preshow. and i think that's going to be a very special performance. its going to be shown live as part of the pre-game show on cbs. and also, before the game, alicia keys is going to sing the national anthem, can't wait to hear both from the chorus and also alicia keys. all right. coming up, we talk to a new orleans native who absolutely loves his city but you know what he also loves san francisco. we'll learn more about that coming up. >> all right, michelle. sounds great. thank you. we have some other bay area headlines now to get to at

meteorologist lawrence with a check of weather. good morning. breaking news out of sunnyvale. chopper 5 just launched so now we are getting an overhead view. this is northbound 101 approaching fair oaks avenue. several lanes are still block. and traffic is stacked up into santa clara so again the accident is right there. you can see two lanes blocked two lanes open. and the backups extend for an exit maybe more. it has been growing since 2:30

this morning. a big rig crashed into the guardrail so there is some guardrail damage a fuel spill in the area. it didn't overturn so no serious injuries. it's just taking a while to clean up. a lot of wood debris in lanes, as well. so bottom line, avoid 101. use highway 85 or 280. on the maps, right now at the scene you can see very slow going 280 no problem at all that's your drive time up to 14 machines now between 280 and highway 237. but it's likely even a little longer than that. elsewhere westbound 580 approaching grant line road accident there still blocking one lane. and an accident in vallejo westbound 80 approaching tennessee street. accident gone, cleared to the right-hand shoulder and no longer seeing those delays from redwood road. that's a check of traffic. for the latest on your forecast here's lawrence. >> a lot of sunshine coming our way some temperatures near 70 by this afternoon. still chilly now in spot. we have some 30s and 40s right now. couple of patches of fog

showing up in the north bay valleys. by the afternoon, plenty of sunshine all the way to the coastline, even 60s at the beeps, mid-60s inside the bay. upper 60s as you head inland. high pressure still building in overhead. it is going to stick around. the storm track well to the north of the bay area so these temperatures staying well above the average for this time of year. in fact, almost 9 degrees above average in some parts of the bay area. so you get get going it be a beautiful day, not a bad day to fly in on out of sfo. no delays expected there at about 60 degrees. around the country 70 in houston, about 50 with some clouds into denver. they have some snow only about 18 degrees in chicago and new york. checking in with showers and about 52 degrees. around our bay we'll see those temperatures soaring this afternoon as high as 67 in morgan hill, 66 in san jose, and 67 degrees in palo alto. east bay temperatures moving well into the 60s. and then as you get inside the bay we'll keep those temperatures mainly in the 60s outside as high as 68 degrees, one of the hot spots in oakland. next couple of days plenty of sunshine in fact over the weekend maybe just a few more

large for cbsmoneywatch.com, has some words of caution. good morning, jill. tell us how many adults are we talking about in this so-called sandwich situation? >> reporter: well, that half of adults in their 40s and 50s have a parent who is aged 65 or older and are either raising a young child or financially supporting a grown child. now, here's the number that's kind of interesting. 15% are providing financial support to both parents and child and among all those with a living parent aged 65 or older about a third say their parents require some emotional support. not surprisingly that number goes up as parents start to age. >> being a baby boomer i got a lot of friends in this situation. tell us, how are the numbers changed. >> reporter: well, interesting, the financial and emotional support for parents pretty much unchanged. but the numbers have jumped dramatically when it comes to parents who are helping their adult children. obviously, this is bumped up due to the recession. when you look at all parents,

30% say they have given some type of financial support to their grown child in the past year but check this out. 73% of those who are aged 40 to 59 those boomers have provided support to a grown child in the past year. and even more astounding, half say they are providing the primary support for that adult child. so this is an astounding trend truly. >> it's going to be dangerous too because eventually they are going to run out of money, right? >> well, i think that's the issue here, some parents are putting their own financial lives in jeopardy for the sake of their adult children. i'm not telling you to not help your kids. if you are doling out money to your kids regularly, are you making greater sacrifices in your life than your kids are making in their lives? if so, you have to have a tough conversation and just a warning. parents who assume additional debt or cosign loans with their
